Choose the right blade for your project

Selecting the right blades for floor strippers is crucial for efficient and clean removal of floor coverings. The machine used, the conditions on site, the floor covering to be removed and the adhesive strength of the floor covering adhesive all play an important role. Each stripper machine has a specific maximum blade width that can be used and each stripper has different conditions that need to be taken into account. At Wolff you will find a wide range of different blades:

Straight Blades

Straight blades are ideal for cutting and removing bonded textile or resilient floor coverings. Before using a carpet stripper, the flooring should be cut into strips that are slightly wider than the machine's blades. This allows the machine to cut through the adhesive layer unhindered. Pre-cutting is usually done by hand using a blade with a hooked blade, but this is time-consuming and tedious. Alternatively, the Wolff Ergo Cutter Pro can be used for a more efficient and faster cut. The particular advantage here is that you can cut while standing. Pre-cutting is not always necessary for resilient floor coverings, as these often break off at the blade edge when the stripper machine is in action. The PS 230 parquet saw is suitable for pre-cutting parquet, even if several floor coverings are glued together.

Blade thickness

This is determined by the type of floor covering to be removed and the weight of the floor covering stripper. Softer materials such as textiles require a thinner blade (usually from 0.7 mm), while harder, resilient coverings such as linoleum, vinyl and rubber require a slightly thicker blade (usually 1 mm - 1.5 mm thick). A longer, stronger special knife is required for removing linoleum (4 mm thick) as well as solid and multi-layer parquet (usually from 3 mm thick).

Blade width

The width of the blade usually depends on the width of the flooring stripper. The Wolff strippers are designed so that the standard blade width is parallel to the wall, allowing the flooring to be stripped flush with the wall. A narrow blade is used for very firm bonds (e.g. solid parquet bonded with PU), as the force is concentrated on a smaller area. For this purpose, the strips to be pre-cut are cut narrower than the blade to facilitate removal. Wider blades are used for standard bonds (e.g. dispersion adhesives), as it does not require as much force to cut through this adhesive layer. In this case, the force can be distributed over a wider blade. Therefore, always carry out a test beforehand. This will show you how difficult it is to remove the coating and you can cut the coating to the correct width.

Serrated blade

Serrated blades are serrated and are used to remove floor coverings with felt and fleece backing. These blades are suitable for oscillating strippers such as the Duro, Lupo and Vario Silent, as they perform a cutting motion. In contrast, strippers with a beating motion such as Turbo, Bi-Turbo and Robo use a back and forth movement of the blade. A special serrated blade (81205) is available for carpets with SDR (synthetic double backing). Here, the reduced contact surface increases the contact pressure on the subfloor and thus removes more of the double backing.

Special blades for parquet

Special blades for parquet are specially developed for removing stubborn flooring and parquet. They are longer in order to get under the flooring better and significantly thicker so that no impact energy is lost. These blades are made of high-quality steel and are therefore very robust. In some cases, they have screwed-on deflectors for better deflection of larger pieces of parquet. They are only suitable for certain stripper models such as Independence, Maverick, Robo, Bi-Turbo and Turbo Stripper (in conjunction with the parquet deflector set). These blades make removing parquet much easier and minimise the risk of damage to the machine or the subfloor.

U-shaped blades

U-shaped blades offer an alternative to time-consuming pre-cutting and subsequent stripping with a straight blade. These blades perform both operations at the same time, saving time and effort. The U-shaped blade cuts the floor covering at the sides and thus removes the covering from below. U-blades are available in two versions:

Top cutting edge (grinded at the top) ► for normal subfloors

Bottom cutting edge (grinded at the bottom) ► for soft subfloors

Special Blades

There are special blades for particularly persistent floor coverings such as linoleum with a thickness of more than 2.5 mm, rubber with a thickness of more than 3.5 mm as well as solid and multi-layer parquet. These blades have a thickness of 3 mm and a length of 120 mm, which is usually much longer than standard straight blades (60 mm). The width can vary (250 mm or 350 mm). These blades are not suitable for strippers with an oscillating beater, but only for strippers with a beating motion such as the Turbo, Bi-Turbo, Robo Stripper, Maverick or Independence.

Blade Selector

To simplify the recommended use of the individual replacement and special blades for the Independence, Maverick, Robo, Biturbo and Turbo Stripper, you will find the blade selector on the right.

Blade replacement made easy

Regularly replacing the blades on a floor stripper is a crucial aspect in ensuring the efficiency and longevity of the appliance. With Wolff floor strippers, this change is simple and easy. The old blade can be removed and a new one fitted safely in just a few simple steps. This not only reduces downtime, but also helps to maintain the optimum performance of the floor stripper.

Recommended replacement intervals

The service life of the blade depends heavily on the stress and the specific conditions of use. It is difficult to make a generalised statement here; it can range from just 20 to 120m². In general, the sharper the blade, the easier and faster the stripper can strip the floor. By checking the blade regularly and replacing it in a timely manner, you can ensure that the floor stripper always works at maximum efficiency and delivers clean, precise results.

Advantages of regular blade replacement

Unfortunately, blades are often replaced far too late. This results in valuable working time being lost. More adhesive also remains on the subfloor. A fresh blade minimises the effort required and increases the working speed. It also reduces wear on the device itself, which contributes to a longer service life of the floor stripper. Regular maintenance and timely blade replacement are therefore key factors in maintaining the quality and reliability of your work processes.

Please never regrind your blade yourself! Firstly, the hardening of the metal will be lost and the blade will become blunt much faster than before. Secondly, shortening the length of the knife also changes the angle of attack of the blade.

If you have any questions about changing the blade or require further technical support, please contact our sales staff, our technical customer service or our application technology department. Wolff will provide you with comprehensive support to make your work as efficient and smooth as possible.

Transport and storage

WOLFF offers special blade cases for safe storage and transport of the blades. These are available for the Robo, Biturbo, Turbo and Vario Silent Stripper. On the one hand, these blade cases contain all the important blades for a wide range of applications, and on the other, they ensure that the blades can be stored safely, neatly and in a space-saving manner. The blade case protects the blades from damage and ensures that they are always ready to hand. This is particularly important to maximise efficiency on the construction site and extend the service life of the tools.

COMPATIBILITY AND CONSULTING

In our catalogue and on our homepage, you will find the compatible blades displayed directly next to the machine. This makes selection easier and ensures that you always have the right tool for the job at hand. As mentioned at the beginning, the choice of blades depends on several factors, including the type of floor covering, the adhesive bond and the specific properties of the floor covering.

If you have specific questions about choosing the right blade for your project, please do not hesitate to contact us. Our team of professionals can provide you with personalised advice and ensure that you get the optimal tools and machines for your needs.
